Laura Bergus seeks re-election to Iowa City city council

Laura Bergus announced today she is running for re-election to Iowa City’s city council. Bergus is in her fourth year on council, serving in an at-large seat.

“What’s different this time around?” Bergus said, speaking of her campaign. “What’s different is that I’ve proven I will do the work for Iowa City. I am proud of my track record on city council.”

Bergus’ first term on city council started in 2020. She quickly faced the policy challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. She supported Mayor Bruce Teague’s mask mandate, and collaborated with Johnson County to provide direct financial assistance to hard-hit families.

Bergus helped lead the City of Iowa City’s response to protests in support of Black lives. She authored Resolution No. 20-159, providing concrete steps for the city to work against systemic racism.

On city council, Bergus works closely with city staff and with residents. “Local government has a direct, daily impact on people’s lives,” Bergus said. “Water, roads, trash and recycling, trails, parks, and pools. Our public library, where we welcome every person. More than any other level of government, we experience the outcomes of our decisions, all the time.”

Bergus said her passion for improving Iowa City is reflected in the city’s recently adopted strategic plan. “We have a vision for a shared future where people have what they need to thrive, together. We have committed to strengthening our inclusive community, building resilience, and fostering collaboration.”

In addition to her council service, Bergus worked in the past for the City of Iowa City and the City of North Liberty, in communications. She volunteered for nine years on the council-appointed Telecommunications Commission for Iowa City.

After her local government career, Bergus attended law school at the University of Iowa. She has practiced law since 2011 and is an owner and managing partner at Hayek, Moreland, Smith & Bergus, LLP in downtown Iowa City. She also is a mediator and practices collaborative law.

In addition to professional and public service, Bergus has a strong record of volunteering, having served on the boards of directors of several local nonprofits. She can often be found helping out with South District Neighborhood Association events.

Bergus has lived in Iowa City her entire life, which she said helps her relate to a variety of community members: “I have lived in different neighborhoods, and I know this town as a child, a student, a young parent, a professional, and a business owner.”

“Now, I am asking to continue to serve as your city councilor,” Bergus said. “I will lead with love, courage, and conviction.”

The city council election will be Tuesday, November 7, 2023.
